Carpal Tunnel Syndrome/Orange County Chiropractor
As a top Orange County chiropractor, I treat carpal tunnel syndrome often, successfully, and without surgery. It’s been my experience, in fact, that even severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated without invasive surgeries.
Too often carpal tunnel syndrome surgery means a lengthy and painful recovery. It means work limitations for several weeks to months. In addition, surgery is no guarantee that the condition will not reemerge years later.
When you consider what carpal tunnel syndrome is and why it happens, surgery actually stops making sense. Even the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIH) do not recommend surgery as a first-line treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, and I don’t recommend it at all. Further, the NIH reports that almost half of those who have this surgery are left with residual numbness and weakness in their hands or arms.
When you consider all these factors: The high cost of surgery—not to mention the recovery time—and outcomes, it becomes clear that surgery is not the recommended course.
Top Orange County Chiropractor Explains Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is made up of the knobby bones located at the junction of the wrist or hand. The carpal tunnel holds the median nerve, which begins in your arm. When the median nerve is restricted or compressed at the carpal tunnel junction, the result is carpal tunnel syndrome.
There is strong evidence that repetition of movements in the hand or wrist may contribute to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome—sewing, typing, construction. However, a variety of medical conditions or trauma can increase your risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome, too, including:
- Wrist fractures
- Inflammatory diseases
- Autoimmune diseases
- Being overweight
- Menopause
- Thyroid disorders
- Kidney disorders
Women are also more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome compared with men.
The symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome may include:
- Numbness or tingling
- Finger pain
- Hand weakness
- Pain in the shoulder
- Shooting pain
Chiropractic Care For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Makes Sense
Orange County Chiropractor
As a top Orange County Chiropractor, I treat patients with pain issues daily. So often, these pain issues are nerve related. Carpal tunnel syndrome is no exception.
When the median nerve becomes pinched or compromised in the carpal tunnel, gentle manipulations by a skilled chiropractor can help free this nerve or provide a more productive nerve pathway environment. When this happens, function is restored and pain dissipates.
With the addition of therapies like cold laser therapy, for example, inflammation is reduced, which promotes healing. When inflammation is reduced, the median nerve takes up less space in the carpal tunnel. The nerve is no longer pressing on the knobby bones and settles into the carpal tunnel pathway the way it resided there for years prior to inflammation or injury.
This approach to healing simply makes the most sense. It deals directly with the nerve without invasive and costly surgeries that, according to the NIH, don’t really resolve the problem or guarantee that the painful syndrome will not come back.
